ABOUT CAPSTAN NATIONAL

INDEPENDENT VALUATION YOU CAN BUILD A DECISION ON

Capstan National provides independent valuation and survey services to the marine industry. We work with owners, lenders, insurers, and counsel who need a defensible number and a clear account of how it was reached.

Our practice covers appraisals, condition & value surveys, marine business valuations, and expert witness work — detailed on our Services page.

Marine assets are not interchangeable, and neither are the reasons people need them valued. A lender's collateral question, an underwriter's loss adjustment, and a shareholder dispute each demand a different scope of work. We scope the engagement to the decision it has to support.

STANDARDS WE FOLLOW

Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice

The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP®) is the generally recognized ethical and performance standards for the appraisal profession in the United States. The ethical and procedural standards it establishes ensures that valuation work is performed with independence, objectivity, and due diligence. These standards define how an appraiser must develop and report an assignment so the results are credible, transparent, and supported by verifiable data. USPAP-compliant appraisals follow a uniform framework for research, analysis, and disclosure, which strengthens reliability and reduces the risk of bias or unsupported conclusions.

Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), American Society of Appraisers

Sam Littlefield, ASA

The American Society of Appraisers is a professional organization that sets strict standards for appraisal practice across multiple disciplines, including marine assets. ASA-accredited appraisers complete rigorous education, testing, and peer review to demonstrate competence and ethical compliance. They are required to follow USPAP and ASA's own discipline-specific standards, which ensures consistent, defensible valuation work. Clients benefit from an ASA appraiser's verified expertise, transparent methodology, and commitment to producing reliable, well-supported appraisal conclusions.
